Fig. 94- Minion Hebrew No. 613.
From the Blaeu foundry.
The first of the type that I can say certainly comes from Blaeu is an Arabic,
now the Two-line Pico Arabic No. 658 of our inventory, shown in fig. 90 (p. 117). It has
been adapted for the Malay language as our Two-line Pico Malay No. 653 (fig. 91, p. 117).
It is a remarkable type as being still in use in our printing for oriental countries
and the first of which all the characters are designed to be set on one line.11 should
not be surprised if Nicolaas Briot had cut this fine type, although its first use to
my knowledge was in Blaeu's beautiful edition, Musladini Sodi Kosarium politicum, 1651
(fig. 92).
After the fire of 1672 this Arabic seems not to have been cast by the Blaeu
Foundry, for there is no specimen of it in the sale-catalogue of 1695. The same is
true of a Hebrew, now the Pica Hebrew witlt points No. 629 (fig. 93), also cast as Minion
Hebrew without points No. 613 of our inventory (fig. 94), and of a set of capitals, the Four-line
Small Pica Roman Titling Capitals N0.20 of our inventory (fig. 95). These capitals are in a
Voskens specimen,2 and were used by Blaeu, for example in 1631 for his edition of
Grotius's De iure belli ас pads. Our matrices came from the sale of Voskens & Clerk
in 1780, when they were bought by the Stichter [or Stigter] heirs and from them
passed to the Brothers Ploos van Amstel.3
