THE FIFTEENTH CENTURY
Henric Letter- Lombardie initials No. 2.1 It is probable that it was Henric Lettersnider who made the
sniàer's ambaras initials, No. 2 of our inventory, to supplement his Black Letter. These, so far as they
survive, are shown in the accompanying specimen. They are to be seen in a little
book headed Dot boec van den houte, the book of the Cross,2 and ending with the equiva¬
lent of: 'Printed at Antwerp by me Henric of Rotterdam, letter-cutter' (figs. 13 and 14).
S M X
The initials were in existence by 1498, for they occur in an octavo ofthat year from
the Priory of Den Hem, a Book of the Hours of the Holy Ghost,3 with the colophon
in Dutch: 'Printed at Den Hem outside Schoonhoven, in the year of our Lord 1498
on the 28th day in March'. Two pages of this book are recomposed in fig. 15.
Types from Gouda Great Frimer віаск Letter N0.3.4 (fig. 17, p. 23). Another type reproducing the same hand
as the English-bodied Black Letter is a Great Primer, No. 3 of our inventory.
Johannes Enschedé thought he recognised it in a Book of the Hours of the Virgin
