Calligraphic drawing
These pages illustrate how one design can be used for
several different purposes. This St George and the
Dragon was cut into scraperboard and used on the
cover of a prospectus. It was reversed black to white to
put on the title page, and later was engraved, with a
diamond point, on a large goblet.
Ray finds the exercises on pages 22—23 interesting.
He sees a direct cumparison between them and the
way he draws up his own designs.

Two of a set of twelve Zodiac
designs
These were first designed as
Christmas cards. Here you see
them cut in continuous
calligraphic line on
scraperboard. Several of the
months have been
commissioned as glass engraved
roundels.
