This is how the finished
alphabet looks. Briem still is not
satisfied. He says, 'The split caps
are still "work-in-progress"
even if I have already run an
edition of prints. They need
refining. I'd like to work
towards a lighter texture.'

When Briem used the split
caps on a magazine cover he
wanted a sturdier version. The
character combinations offered
the opportunity of playing with
two letters S side by side.

The sketches show how
much control was imposed in
the later stages of work.
