PÎQjjQ Winkler Fiona had just completed a year's Foundational Course
when she answered an advertisement from Alec
Peever's Lettering Studio. He wanted an assistant to
help with all aspects of his work. He said, 'The
applicant has to have an interest in making things.
There is no need to know about lettering'. This was
just as well, as Fiona had not been exposed to lettering
during her course. To remedy this, she enrolled in
calligraphy classes one day a week, and the rest of the
time learned in a practical way in the workshop.

These freely interpreted Uncials came from the rough
draft for a trust deed. The lettering shows a bold,
legible and imaginative use of one of the hands she
studied on her course. Studying historic Ietterforms
does not mean always reproducing them exactly.
When Fiona developed these letters she put a lot of her
own personality into them.

Fiona is more interested in
learning techniques than in
producing finished work. This
piece was lettered on a large
sheet of thin paper, and the
square Roman capitals of the
main quotation 'Art is born of
constraint ..." are written in
watery burnt sienna ink. The
background wording is written
in reverse on the back of the
paper, and shows through as a
speckled sludge colour.
Having seen how effective
the square Roman capitals
could look in different tones,
Fiona used them in her next
job, which was a wedding
invitation. The finished card
was printed in tones of ochre
and looked most unusual.
Notice the asymmetric line
spacing with a careful balance
of text and white space.
