The Collects
Similar types of liturgical scenes to those which occur in MS Douce 313 are to be
found in many manuscripts, but they do not usually illustrate Collects.11
There are ten Collect miniatures in the Pentecost Cycle of the Missal, eight for
the Vigil, one for Pentecost Wednesday and one for Pentecost Saturday. These are
quite simple scenes showing a priest before an altar with one or two of his congrega¬
tion. These miniatures give no indication of the words of the prayer, and in this they
differ from the illustration of the Votive Collects and the Collects of the Requiem
11 Compare Paris, BN ms fr. 13342, a Fourteenth Century Anglo-Norman treatise on the Mass
which has many miniatures that indicate what the congregation should do at various parts of the Mass.
Compare also the numerous examples of miniatures of a priest before an altar that illustrate “Ad te
levavi”, the Introit for the first Sunday of Advent, or the Adoration of the Host at the “Te igitur”.
