112. Two outline types of Blake & Stephenson, circa 1833 [262]
Outline or Open
'hilite', and hand-tooled have been freely interchanged in their speci¬
men books ! In the true outline type the outlining is of the same weight
round the whole of the stem, but some letters may be admitted to this
group which have outlines fractionally thicker on one side of the stem
(usually the right) than on the other. True outline letters are therefore
lighter than shaded letters—white & not black preponderating in their
designs.
The chapter heading shows a fine contemporary outline letter.
Some contemporary outline or open types
Columna (Bauer), Moreau le jeune (Deberny & Peignot), Old Face
Open—but an outline face in its smaller sizes only—the 60 point size,
for example, is a shaded letter (Stephenson Blake), Open Capitals
(Enschedé), Normandia Outline (Nebiolo).
