A Note on Citations

Citations for the incunables have been provided by Paul Needham (with occasional
insertions by Michael Joseph, as noted); citations for all other materials have been
prepared by Michael Joseph (with occasional insertions by Paul Needham, as
noted). For every book in the exhibition there is a reference, given in abbreviation,
to a standard bibliography. Abbreviations can be found in the Key to Abbreviations
following the list of works cited at the end of the catalog. While all descriptions
indicate book format (i.e., the number of folds in the average sheet used for that
particular book), the descriptions of the incunables include both format and paper
sizes. The nomenclature of the paper sizes is that given by Paul Needham, "Aldus
Manutius's Paper Stocks:The Evidence of Two Uncut Books," Princeton University
