and assist her sister, Anna Constantia.1 The latter died in 1751 and her heiress was
her niece, Jacoba Catharina Cambier, née Ofsen. Her husband, Jacob Cambier,
burgomaster of Vianen, bought the other half-share from his mother-in-law, and so
after more than fifty years of divided ownership the business had one owner.
By this time the concern had very much declined ; it had become difficult to com¬
pete with English and Scottish printers in the market for Bibles. The typefoundry
had not kept abreast of fashion; the attempts of Cambier to put new life into it
by commissioning matrices for new types are described in the chapter on the
eighteenth century.2
The equipment ofthe printing house and the typefoundry was put up to sale by
auction in April 1755.3 The types were bought by various printers ; the typefoundry
as one lot was sold to Jan Roman, who went into partnership with Jacob Cambier
and Lijnslager.4
By 1767 these partners found themselves obliged to sell the typefoundry, and

to purchase it privately, Johannes Enschedé and the brothers Ploos van Amstel
succeeded in acquiring it at the sale. They shared the material equally.2 ]3
after his day it remains to look more closely at his material. Unfortunately, his work
is difficult to identify for lack of evidence. I must content myself with probabilities.
There are no specimens of Van Dijck's types dating from his lifetime: the earliest
document we can rely on is the sheet found at Antwerp by Alphonse Willems,
which must have accompanied the letter from the Widow Elsevier to the Widow
Moretus.3
