of the seventeenth century had this type, no doubt because it could be got from
the foundry of Voskens, an establishment of which I shall have more to say.2
Matrices for this typeface were bought at the sale of the Voskens business in 1780
by the firm of Bruyn, probably so that they might gain a monopoly of supplying it.
of which the only copy is in the Museum Plantin-Moretus.3 Its earliest use, so far
as is known, was for a book, Van ghehoorsaemiieyt by A. Adriaensens, printed at Louvain
in 1571.4 The punches were in the stock of Van den Keere's foundry bought by
Plantin in 1580 and they are in the same Museum.5 The original matrices were
claimed by the foreman of the foundry, Thomas de Vechter, who doubtless took
them to Leyden when he set up in business there in 1584.6 J)

is well attested, for it is found in Plantin' s edition of the Hymns, Epigrams, and Fragments
of Calltmaclius, printed at Leyden in 1584.7 Two pages of this book reset in our type
are shown in fig. 41 (p. 62). The matrices came from the [EgenolfF-Berner later]
Luther Foundry in Frankfurt.8 It is not impossible that this beautiful face was cut
by Jacques Sabon. It can be seen in many Dutch books of the seventeenth century,
and it is associated with the typefoundries of Blaeu and Daniel Elsevier. I shall deal
with it in the following chapter.
