in their original condition until 1814, when they were at last justified. The shapes
of the letters show plainly that the type is ancient; but I do not think it is Dutch.
The capitals in particular seem to me to bespeak a French origin.1 I have never
handled a book printed in this type ; and though further research may prove that it
is later in date, I class it as fifteenth-century because Johannes Enschedé thought it
so, and nothing in the fashion of the letters makes his opinion untenable. The speci-

typographiques.1 It is Part of а poem by Olivier de la Marche, Le chevalier délibéré, printed
at an unidentified press at Gouda; but the type of the original is quite unlike ours.2
Let me add a word about the matrices in these sets. The fact, that they are not quite rk Enschedé
complete is not surprising: what is much more remarkable is their survival until collection of
early matrices
