THE FIFTEENTH CENTURY
In 1498 a new printer appears at Delft, Henric Eckert van Homberch, equipped
with the same type. I give in fig.io a resetting of a page of a magnificent book by
him, Dai Vader hoec, the lives and the legends of the Holy Fathers,1 with an imprint
meaning: 'Printed at Delft in Holland by me Henric Eckert van Homberch, in the
year of our Lord 1498'. Van Homberch moved his press to Antwerp in 1503,2 and the

type went with it. All his Antwerp books that I have seen are done in the same letter.
One of the best of them, the Fassionael of аиЫеи legende,3 is represented here by a page
(fig. 12, p. 19).The book ends with a colophon in Dutch: 'Here ends the reverend
and noteworthy book called the passional or golden legend very diligently trans¬
lated from Latin into Dutch. Printed at Antwerp, within the Camerpoort, by me
Henric Eckert van Homberch, in the year of our Lord 1505, the 20th day in May'.

One more mark of favour for this type is that Peter van Os, who printed at Zwolle
from about 1478 to 1522, bought it when he needed a new fount in 1499.4 Fig. n, p. 18,
is a resetting of a page from one of his books, Dot boec van den leven ons liefs Heren Jesu chrisû,5
closing with the imprint in Dutch: 'Printed at Zwolle by me Peter Os van Breda,
finished in the year of our Lord MCCCCcxix (sic for 1499) the 15th day in March. Deo
gracias.
This Black Letter is to be seen in many books printed in all parts of the Low
Countries during the sixteenth century. After a time it was superseded by a style
of letter known as Nederduyts (Low Germanic).6
