claim without fear of being discredited. His types of this class are, indeed, a close
and, it must be admitted, a successful imitation of those that Fleischman cut for
Enschedé, so that the differences can be found out only by the most careful in¬
spection. By this time the sets of matrices for them are far from perfect.; but by
borrowing a letter here and there from another fount I can reconstruct. De Groot's
specimen very nearly.
In this fashion I reproduce his Black Letters for Long Primer No. Щ, Small Pica No. 864,
English No. 865, Great Primer No. 866, Paragon No. 86j, Two-line English No. 868 and French Canon
No.Щ (figs. 477-479» 482~484- PP- 388> 389)-
When he set up in business De Groot bought a number of strikes from J.-F.
Rosart; at any rate his specimen-book of 17811 has types in it which are exactly

like those that Rosart cut for Pfeiffer. However, apart from the Paragon Hebrew No. 623
(fig. 340, p. 271), a Double Pico Script like our No. 798 (fig. 328, p. 265) and a set of Psalm-Notes
on Great Primer (fig. 485, p. 389), De Groot, at it seems, bought no more matrices
from Rosart, though he kept a watch on his output of new faces. Certainly his
Outline shaded Capitals (fig. 486, p. 390) were very much in the manner of Rosart. In all
probability De Groot had a punchcutter who imitated the work of others, seeing
that his two smaller types in the same manner, the Two-line Small Pica, No. fy and the
Two-line Brevier, No. 874 cut somewhat later are more nearly French in style. The out¬
line shaded capitals on Two-îine Great Primer, No. 875 appear first in the specimen of
Harmsen & Co. of Amsterdam; but the design is so like that of De Groot's types
that I feel sure they date from his time. On the other hand, Harmsen's Two-line Pearl
