[1] Johannes Enschedé made a note of this address in his
copy of Willem Cupy's specimen of Hebrew types, List of
type-specimens no. 117: 'Willem Cupy woond in de Blomstraat,
tusschen de Ackelye-straat en Baangracht te Amsterdam'.
Charles Enschedé's further information on Willem Cupy is
completely erroneous. Willem's grandfather, Martin Cupy
(or Coepy), a native of Brück in Silesia, had made up a con¬
tract as typefounder in Amsterdam in November 1701. Ap¬
parently he setded in Amsterdam at about that time, as he
was also admitted as a member of the Lutheran community
late in 1701. One type-specimen of Martin Cupy is known
(List of type-specimens No. 38). He died in 1705, and his son

Cupy's establishment must have had its beginning in the seventeenth or early
eighteenth century.2
The matrices that came to Enschedé after the sale as his share were : Double Pico

Rabbinical No. 841 and Brevier Rabbinical No. 640, (figs. 390—395). Ploos van Amstel took a

Jan Philip succeeded him as typefounder after coming of age.
No type-specimen of Jan Philip Cupy is known, but there is
an advertisement in the Amsterdamse Courant of 21 February
1711, and an amusing character sketch of him by Thomas
James in a letter of 1710, quoted by Rowe Mores (pp. 52-54). His
son Willem Cupy, who said that he was born in Leeuwarden,
lived in Amsterdam by 1734 and died in 1772. The editor's
cordial thanks for the information deriving from AG A are due
to Dr. I. H. van Eeghen. See further Van Eeglien 5, Letterqicterijeii.
[2] See List of type-specimens no. 117. The specimen must
be dated с 1769.
