Sabon
WAS DESIGNED BY JAN
TSCHICHOLD IN THE 1960s. ГТ WAS IN
response to the needs of German master printers for a typeface in
identical form for mechanical composition by lino-casting and
single-type methods as well as hand composition in foundry types.
It was developed jointly by Linotype, Monotype and Stempel. The
sources for the design can be seen on the specimen sheet of the
Frankfurt typefounder, Konrad Berner, whose wife was the widow
of another typefounder, Jacques Sabon. This roman face is based
on a fount engraved by Garamond, and the italic on a fount by
Granjon. But Tschichold introduced many refinements to make
the final result more suitable for the requirements of the three
companies involved in its development.
