Plantin is
NAMED AFTER THE FAM¬
OUS ANTWERP PRINTER, CHRISTOPHE
Plantin. It was designed for the Monotype Corporation by F H.
Pierpont, who took as his model a sixteenth century typeface which
can be seen in work done at Frankfurt and Basle around 1570.
Although Plantin himself seems never to have used it, it is at least
of the right generation. Plantin is a heavy face with a large x-height
and represents one of the early attempts to design a fount that is
economical with paper. The italic is of regular slope with very short
descenders. There is also a semi-bold face. A modernized Monotype
Plantin served as the basis for Times New Roman. Plantin Old
Style has very little connection with Plantin except that they are
both heavy faces with a large x-height. It is in fact identical with
American Typesetters’ New Caslon face.
