Palatino was
DESIGNED BY HERMANN
ZAPF AND ISSUED BY STEMPEL IN 1950,
Zapf (b. 1918) is one of Europe's greatest contemporary type
designers and one of the most influential of the post World
War II era. He began his career in a foundry still producing
metal type for hand setting but showed an enthusiastic
welcome for new technologies - film setting, digital type.
Palatino was one of the faces that established his reputation.
This roman face has broad letters with strong inclined serifs
and short descenders. The proportions of the wide capitals
and their curves and serif structure reflect his study of
classical inscriptions. The face is named after a sixteenth
century penman but it is inspired by Venetian romans. It has a
strong calligraphic flavour and looks better in text setting than
as individual letters. Few contemporary faces can match it for
freshness, originality and unity of total impression.
