WATCH OUT FOR
WINTER
OPTIMA
BEFORE WINTER COMES CHECK...
Roofs, Chimney Pots and Cutters are
sound and gutters are not blocked. A
builder will inspect and estimate for
necessary work.
Drain Gratings are clear and water
carried away easily.
Flues are not blocked, and are swept
annually.
Cold weather can cause plumbing
problems so Find your main water stop
valve, usually where the water pipe
enters your house or near the sink, and
make sure it operates easily.
Rewasher any dripping taps and leaking
ball valves. Check that ball valves do
not stick and overflow pipes are clear.
Inspect your cold water tank for
corrosion.
Insulate pipes and tanks, but leave the
underside of your tank and the space
beneath free, so that warmth can reach
it. You may be able to get a grant from
your Local Authority.
Central Heating Systems should be
regularly checked by an expert.
Cas Appliances should be serviced
regularly by British Gas or a member of
CORGI. Remember that they need an
adequate supply of air.
- the shorter the safer. Use a continuous
length from plug to appliance.
Adaptors should be avoided. If you
must, use one with a fuse and don't
overload it. Don't plug in irons or
heaters to light fittings.
Radiant Fires must have a permanent
safety guard and where there are
children, an adequate fixed fireguard.
Radiant fires in small rooms must be
fixed high on the wall at least 3ft from
any furniture, curtains or doors. In a
bathroom or near a shower they must
have permanent wiring and pull-cord
switches. Never fit time switches to
radiant fires.
Convector or Storage Heaters should
never be covered. Airing cupboard
heaters must be shielded.
Paraffin Heaters - Never buy
secondhand. Keep fuel in a container
designed for the purpose - out of doors
if possible - which is where you should
fill the heater.
Do not place your heater in doorways
or draughts, and make sure there is
plenty of fresh air. Never fill or move it
when it is alight, and if possible fix to
the floor. Keep the burner clean — dust
can restrict the heater's vital airflow.
Renew the wick at the start of winter,
and never let it become choked or dirty
— use a wick cleaner.
Open Fires should have adequate
ventilation. Do not air clothes on a
fireguard or close to a fire. Never
"draw" a fire with a sheet of paper.
IN WINTER CHECK...
Electric Appliances must have the
correct fuse in the plug and, if it blows, a
higher rated one should never be fitted.
Flexes should be short and undamaged
Optima combines the virtues of clarity as in a sans serif with the humanity of a
roman face. This is due to the varying degrees of stress normally found in a
serified face being incorporated in a sans serif typeface. Its variety of weights
from light to ultra black combined with clarity of letterform make it an ideal
choice for the subject shown above.
