Modern was in-
TRODUCED BY STEPHENSON
BLAKE IN THE 1850s AND IS ONE OF THE
few types still sold that date from the mid nineteenth
century, when the skills of cutting punches by hand were
still important. It is carefully designed throughout the font
sizes with the weight of thick and thin strokes varying
considerably according to the size. Its fine hairlines and
delicate serifs make it hard to render in digital and offset
work. There are several versions of this characteristic English
typeface and some of its original features have been precisely
rendered in the twentieth-century revivals, such as the sharp
breaks of the curves and the slight bracketing of the serifs.
