Helvetica

WAS FORMERLY CALLED

NEUE HAAS GROTESK. IT APPEARED IN 1959

and, with its late nineteenth century derivation, contributed to
the return of less romanized sanserifs to fashion. The contrast
between roman and sanserif when used in combination is
heightened rather than diminished. It was designed by Max
Miedinger, a Swiss, for Haas and became one of the dominant
types of the 1960s, together with Univers, which it resembles
in some ways. But the Helvetica capitals are closer to the turn-
of-the-century sanserifs on which it was based, with wider and
rounder forms than Univers and a somewhat ‘anonymous’
character.
