Garamond
OR GARAMONT IS BASED ON
DESIGNS BY ALDUS MANUTIUS. THE FIRST SPEC-
imens appear in books printed in Paris around 1532. Claude Garamond
(1480-1561) is thought to have originally produced this Romain de
l’Université but there is evidence to show that the original design was
produced sixty years after Garamonds death by Jean Jannon. Certainly,
many present-day versions of it are based on the Typi Accademiae of
Jannon, which was cut in Sedan around 1615. It was revived towards the
end of the nineteenth century by the Imprimerie Nationale in Paris, using
Jannon’s 1641 face, cut for the (then) Imprimerie Royale. It is a face of
high legibility with long serifs in the upper case with wedge-shaped
brackets. The lower case has wedges on the ascenders and on the upright
stems. It is available in several basic models. That of Deberney &
Poignot, early twentieth century, was based on the original types and has
not been copied by other founders. The 1917 version from American
Typefounders was used as a basis by several other foundries.
