Frutiger
WAS ISSUED BY LINOTYPE IN
1977 IT WAS DESIGNED BY ADRIAN FRUTIGER
(b. 1928), the artistic director of Deberney & Poignot in Paris and
one of the leading type designers in the world. Frutiger began as a
signage alphabet for the Paris-Roissy airport, which opened in
1975. It is recognisably a descendant of Univers, which Frutiger
had designed in the early 1950s. The letter forms are classical in
their proportions and resemble the Syntax sanserif of Hans Eduard
Meyer, a Swiss designer. It has rounder curves than Univers, as well
as smaller capitals, longer ascenders and descenders, and relatively
generous spacing. It is one of the most important typefaces to
appear since World War II.
