Caslon old face
DATES FROM AROUND 1725
AND WAS PRODUCED IN THE FOUNDRY
started by William Caslon around 1720. This, his first roman face, with
some condensed letters and blunt, evenly bracketed serifs, was modelled
on designs for late seventeenth century Dutch typefaces so it is classed
among the Old Faces rather than with the eighteenth century types. The
matrices based on the original designs are still at Enschede. This typeface
has proved extremely popular and many foundries have their own version
of it. Later adaptations of it include Caslon Open and Caslon Open
Heavy. Intertype Caslon Bold was redesigned and hand cut in 1960. But
the original typeface, once the most popular all over the world, has proved
durable as a ‘clean’, legible face with good contrast and no distracting
embellishments or eccentricities.
