A carer is anyone whose life is in some
way restricted because of the need to take
responsibility for the care of a person who is
mentally ill, mentally handicapped, physi¬
cally disabled or whose health is impaired
by sickness or old age.
A national charity founded in 1988 by the
merger of the Association of Carers and the
National Council for Carers and their
Elderly Dependants which, between them,
have almost thirty years’ experience of
working for carers.
To encourage carers to recognise their own
needs. To develop appropriate support for
carers. To provide information and advice
for carers. To bring the needs of carers to the
attention of government and other policy
makers.
We provide an information and advice
service for carers. We publish a regular
journal which gives carers information and
keeps them in touch. We bring carers’ needs
and problems to the attention of govern¬
ment and the media. We work with
professionals who help carers. We put carers
in touch with one another.
