NEW LINEALE OF UNMISTAKEABLY INDIVIDUAL
style. It derives from turn-of-the-century sanserifs, stressing
contrast rather than similarity when used together with roman.
It was designed by Adrian Frutiger (b.1928), one of the world's
foremost type-designers, and produced simultaneously for metal
and film. But several of the versions now available show slight
variations in the squareness of the curves and the degree of
condensation so they are not always compatible in work
requiring more than one method of composition. Univers was
one of the dominant faces of the sixties and has stamped its
personality on the work of an era. It immediately established
Frutiger's reputation.
