J DELEGACY OF LOCAL EXAMINATIONS

These examinations test reading and writing in a realistic way.
Instead of traditional composition and comprehension questions,
more practical and realistic tasks are used. An English-English
dictionary can be used throughout. The examination is offered at two
levels, Preliminary and Higher. Each examination has two papers:
one for reading and one for writing. While the preliminary
examination is suitable for intermediate students, the Higher is
roughly between Cambridge First Certificate and Proficiency.

PRELIMINARY AND HIGHER CERTIFICATE

PAPER l: Writing (2 hours Preliminary/2 Vi hours Higher)

This paper tests the ability to write informal and formal letters,
reports, telegrams, messages, signs and to fill in forms.

At Higher Certificate level, candidates are expected to do the above
and perform more complex tasks such as summary writing.
Candidates must also demonstrate considerable sophistication and
accuracy in the way they write.

paper 2: Reading (2 hours)

At both levels a variety of authentic materials such as brochures,
advertisements and public information sheets is used.

At Preliminary level candidates will be expected to demonstrate
effective use of a dictionary for reading purposes. Other tasks are
used for the selection of specific information, or understanding the
general meaning of texts.

At Higher level candidates have to complete a variety of complex
tasks based around reading texts. This may involve comparing
differences in style and register. Dictionary skills are tested to an
advanced level.

The example above shows how Times Roman, a typeface often mis-used, can
look good when set with correct spacing and leading. The title line also
indicates the excellence of Times as a display face.
