Bembo

WAS THE FIRST OF THE

OLD FACES TO BE PRODUCED. IT IS A

copy of a roman typeface cut by Francesco Griffo for the
Venetian printer Aldus Manutius. It was First used in the
production of Cardinal Bembos De Aetna in 1495 and it is
grouped with the Old Faces despite this fifteenth-century
cutting. Bembo was taken as a model by Garamond, and is for
this reason considered to have been the forerunner of the
standard European typefaces of the next two centuries. Its serifs
are slighter than those of the earlier romans and the height of
the capitals is less than that of the lower case ascenders. There is
also a titling and a Bembo Condensed Italic designed by Alfred
Fairbank. Bold Italic was added in 1959.
