Hermann Zapf, born in 1918 in Nuremberg,
always understood how to combine
typographic tradition with modern technology.
He designed many typefaces for Linotype,
was the artistic director of the D. Stempel AG
type foundry, and acted as a typographic
advisor to Linotype for almost 20 years.
He taught in Germany and the USA, and was
a professor of "computer typography"
at the Rochester Institute of Technology.
His youngest creation is the calligraphic
typeface Linotype Zapfino.
