Festival DeArt is honored to present
STUDENT WORK FROM THE ROYAL ACADEMY OF ART
(De KONINKLIJKE ACADEMIE VAN BEEIDENDE
Künsten) Type&Media 2003-05 programs.
Type&Media is a unique postgraduate course for
type design and typography. The course attracts
students from around the globe and in 2002 the
course became an official masters program. The
program assists students in acquiring
a deeper understanding of type design for dif¬
ferent media; not only for print, but also film,
television and interactive media. The course has
distinguished itself from other institutions
through the lettering subjects in calligraphy,
general lettering and stone carving.
Type&Media places importance on leading-
edge technologies, as well as traditional skill
areas In historic and contemporary contexts.
Discussions with a number of permanent and
guest lecturers provide a variety of viewpoints
and adds theoretical depth to research projects.
The Type&Media Faculty staff includes; Peter
Verheul (type design), Erik van Blokland (type
design, type technology) and coordinator Jan
Willem Stas (typography). Guest Lecturers; Paul
van der Laan (type design, type technology),
Just van Rossum (programming, type technolo¬
gy), Petr van Blokland (design of the design
process, technology), Peter Bil’ak (typography),
Françoise Berserik (typography, stone cutting),
Frank Blokland (type design), Frans van Mourik
(time based design) and Fred Smeijers (history
of type, type design).
Over the last two years TypeMedia invited sev¬
eral external teachers who gave lectures and
workshops. They include John Downer, Liz Bijl,
Albert-Jan Pool, Luc(as) de Groot, Gerard Unger,
Frantisek Storm and Wigger Bierma.
Throughout the festival lectures and workshops
from some of the above Dutch teachers and
alumnus will take place.
