From the time of Johannes Gutenberg until around the mid-twentieth
century, a "type foundry" was literally that: a shop that poured a molten
mixture of lead, tin and antimony to cast individual letters for use by
printers. This historically precise term has been retained in the digital
age. Type foundry is still used to signify a maker of type-with no
molten metal in sight.
Indie Fonts is a collection of over 2000 fonts from 18 of the most
innovative and active independent type foundries in the field. This
compilation is intended as a unique resource for graphic designers,
type users and typophiles. An easy-to-use reference, this book features
many hard-to-find fonts, as well as fresh type designs that haven't been
over-exposed to the public. Assembling this number of typefaces in a
single resource makes it truly useful for designers seeking typographic
inspiration and practical information.
Each foundry has carefully chosen a selection of fonts to show
from their type libraries, producing their own sections from a flexible
series of pre-determined design outlines. The result is a type specimen
book created with the end user in mind, and one that showcases the
personality of each foundry. Indie Fonts will also delight those who
simply appreciate type and its importance in language and
communications.
The CD-ROM included with Indie Fonts features 33 fonts licensed
for use by you, the owner of this book. The individual foundries with
fonts on the CD-ROM spell out the exact terms of their respective
license agreements. As with all licensed software, the re-distribution, or
"sharing" of these fonts is discouraged—it is ultimately not beneficial to
the designers of the typefaces. We encourage you to abide by the terms
of use set forth by each foundry represented in this publication, and the
rest of the talented type makers hard at work throughout the world.
Support these artisans so that they may continue in their efforts to
provide us with those essential tools of creativity and communications-
new typefaces.
Please design safely.
