The Chank Company operates
out of a warehouse studio in the
arts community of Northeast
Minneapolis. Mister Chank Diesel,
president and CEO, began making
fonts in 1992 when he worked as
creative director of the alterna¬
tive music magazine, Cake.
Chank started selling fonts
door-to-door as The Travelling
Font Salesman in 1995. His fonts
were featured in the Smithson¬
ian's Cooper-Hewitt National
Design Museum as a notable
example of contemporary typo¬
graphy in 1996, the same year he
established www.chank.com. In
1997, Chank incorporated the
company and he was profiled in
The Wall Street Journal, complete
with etched portrait.
The first font Chank created,
Mister Frisky, remains his most
popular. Mister Frisky and its
companion font Uncle Stinky
have enhanced packaging for a
vast array of clients, from
McDonalds to Taco Bell, from
Girl Scouts and Barbie to Howard
Stern and Willy Wonka, from
Aunt Jemima to Walt Disney,
from Coca-Cola to Welch's Grape
Soda, from Prince to Wendy's.
The Chank Company also
creates custom fonts for
companies who want exclusive
rights and a specific design for a
typeface. Clients who have used
Chank's custom font services
include Belkin, Bop! Magazine,
Church's Chicken, Magnetic
Poetry, Medtronic, Mervyn's
California, Multitech, Ocean
Spray, P. Puff Industries, and
2 Grrrls.
Chank's worldwide fame for
the alphabet doesn't end with
fonts. Since 1995, the Minneapolis
designer has been churning out
quirky alphabetic illustrations
and paintings - including his
interpretation of Gainsborough's
Blue Boy - with a hope to beat
Picasso's Guinness Book record
by creating more than a million
pieces in his lifetime. As of May
2002, Chank's pieces number
more than 9,300.
Chank's art and fonts are
collected by fans around the
world, including Sweden, Spain,
Germany, Japan, Australia, New
Zealand, Canada, and the USA.
Chank has also built an
international reputation through
mentoring and representing font
designers from other countries
such as Sweden, New Zealand,
Germany, Denmark, Australia,
and Canada.
In these pages, you'll find
font specimens by Chank, David
Buck of New Zealand, Joseph
Churchward of New Zealand,
Bill Moran of St. Paul, and Martin
Fredrikson of Sweden.
Chank fonts are available in
Mac and PC, PostScript and True
Type. They can be instantly
downloaded from www.chank.com
or ordered by phone, toll-free, at
