In moveable typesetting, interline spacing
was adjusted by inserting strips of lead
between lines of type.
This block of text Is set with 12 point type,
over 6 points of lead. The extra space, or
lead, is indicated In blue. Type is set solid
when no points of lead are added
between lines.

In computer typesetting, the leading
value Is the sum of the point size of the
type used and the amount of space
added between baselines. This text block
uses 12 point type, with 6 points of lead,
and Is specified as "12 (point type) over
18 (point leading)," or 12/18.

Measure
The measure contains the line length, which
Is determined by the sum of the set widths
of all the characters and spaces In a single
line of type. Line length Is measured In picas.

An appropriate line length Is 40
characters of regular width type, which
equals approximately 1.5 alphabets.
Short lines are 8-12 picas in length,
composed of small or condensed type.
Long lines are 24-30 picas in length,
composed of 12-14 point type.
Traditionally, characters are arranged in horizontal strings to
form words. Words are arranged to form sentences. Sentences are
linked into what is called continuons text matter. The MEASURE
is a horizontal space that contains text and determines line length.
Measures stacked on top of one another create COLUMN'S.
